What Is Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing and What Are Its Benefits?

Did you know that spray polyurethane foam roofs provide the highest insulation of any common roof material?

The Environmental Protection Agency of the United States has made it a priority that roofs be made with high insulation materials. Great insulation benefits both the individual building that has it and the whole country as well.

But what exactly are these roofs all about?  What kind of benefits can they provide to you. Read on to learn all about why a spray polyurethane foam roof may be the right choice for you!

This Type of Roof Provides the Greatest Insulation

As we said, spray polyurethane foam roofs have great insulation. Insulation is measured by something called the R-value. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation provided by a material.

Metal roofs are rated with a total 0 in R-value per inch. On the other hand, spray polyurethane foam is rated at a 6.6 per inch R-value. This puts it above other materials like polyiso, EPS insulation, and BUR gravel.

Technically speaking, R-value measures how well a material can resist heat flow. Since spray polyurethane foam roofing has such a high R-value, it will keep the heat out in the summer and the cold out in the winter.

The end result is that a spray polyurethane foam system will decrease total energy costs and also make the inside of your building more comfortable. Over the course of about 10 years, a spray polyurethane foam system will pay for itself in savings to your energy costs.

But even before that, an SPF system will pay for itself. Installing spray polyurethane foam on your roof will increase the value of your building. Many buyers are interested in buildings that have such great insulation!

These Roofs Are Easily Renewed

Not only are spray polyurethane roofs a great product, but they can be easily renewed. That means that when your spray polyurethane foam starts to wear out, it can be easily refreshed and brought back to pristine condition.

Usually, you can tell that your spray foam roof needs to be renewed by measuring how thick the coating on the roof is.

At first, the coating on your roof will probably be between 20 and 30 mils. Later down the road, that might reduce down to about 10 mils of thickness.  That\’s about the right time to replace it.

Of course, you don\’t want a roofing material that needs to be constantly renewed. Fortunately, not only is a spray polyurethane foam roof easy to renew, but it also lasts a long time. You can expect a spray foam roof to last 10 to 20 years between coatings!

These Roofs Are Fast to Install

Whether you are getting spray foam installed or renewed, spray foam roofs are easy to install. In general, you can remove old foam without tearing anything off of the walls or roofs the foam was attached to.

Because you can spray this foam across the roof, installation goes much faster than if you had to spread it or nail it in. Additionally, since it automatically conforms to the exact shape of your roof, there is very little need for high maintenance touching up or filling in of crevices.

These Roofs Easily Fill Crevices

The fact that spray polyurethane foam fills crevices is good for more than just ease of installation. This is one of the main reasons that spray foam roofs have such excellent insulation.

Other roof materials are likely to leave little cracks. Those little cracks are where most of the airflow between inside and outside occur.

It Has No Seams

Spray polyurethane foam has no seams. That makes it an excellent choice for roof waterproofing, and it is another reason that it has such great insulation.

Even other fairly good materials like rubber struggle with the seam problem.  Over time, rubber can dry out and crack. It also expands and contracts with changes in temperature. The end result is the inevitable creation of seams across time.

Other materials suffer from seams because of the erosion of the wind. But polyurethane foam roofs avoid all of these problems and create seamless seals for decades.

It Is Low Maintenance

It is not uncommon for warehouses in other buildings to suffer damages from tools or other accidents. This can happen when somebody drops a sharp tool or a contractor of some kind has been careless while working on your building.

For many materials, this results in what is either a costly or unappealing repair job. Placing patches over damaged areas doesn\’t look the best. and replacing the whole roof is of course a lot more trouble than it\’s worth.

On the other hand, repairing these types of roofs is extremely cheap, simple, and effective.

To fix a spray polyurethane foam roof, all you need to do is cut out the section that has been damaged. You then allow it to dry out and then fill in the hole with caulk.

This job is so simple that you can probably manage it yourself if you wish. Or if you wish to hire a contractor, they can do the job quickly and affordably.
